Interest on College Student Loans

On Tuesday, May 8, 2012, the United States Senate failed to reach the 60 votes needed to begin debate on raising student loan interest.  Stafford loan interest rates will rise

52 Republicans voted against debating the bill.
45 Democrats voted for debating the bill.


Had the bill been enacted, the 3.4 percent interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans would have prevailed for another year. Those rates will now grow to 6.8 percent on July 1 without congressional action, thanks to a 2007 law that gradually lowered Stafford Loan rates.

Democrats and Republicans differ on how the interest rate retention would be paid for.

Mourning Maurice Sendak

In The Night Kitchen, Where the Wild Things Are,  Outside Over There....these wonderful books stretched the minds of children and grown-ups. Maurice Sendak, author and illlustrator of these and many other creative doorways has died at 83. 

Children, parents, librarians, teachers, authors, and anyone who values reading will all be saddened by this news.

The STCC Library has a number of his books on display for interested readers.

Let us hope his wild rumpus has just begun.

Plant Sale in the Greenhouse

The Landscape Department is having its annual plant sale this week. The greenhouse is full of wonderful things.  AND, the weather (they say) will get warmer. 9 to 4 Wednesday - Friday (May 2 -4) in the greenhouse.
